I was recently involved in a project with rAndom International which uses XMOS processors as part of the control system.

It's an art installation created by a design studio in London consisting of three awesome LED cubes.

I've also written a short description of the project on my blog:

Wow.

Is this piece going to be touring? Is there any chance of seeing it in the flesh?

I would just like to add for anyone else reading this - this is a great example of why people should make an effort with their profiles on XCore.com - interesting companies view this site all the time!

I am sure there will be many more opportunities in the future where companies like this will have interesting projects and need people experienced with XMOS technology to implement them. Where do they find XMOS professionals for freelance? Here on XCore.com of course! How will they find you - they will look at your profile/previous projects to see if you are up to the challenge they have in mind.

For any companies reading this who have an XMOS based project in mind they might want to offer as freelance work - please do get in touch either with myself or someone you may have already had your eye on - we dont bite and would be happy to hear from you, even if it is just to discuss ideas! As you can see the standard of implementation by XCore members is top quality.

A big congratulations to f_petrini for his amazing implementation for this project - well done! Are you attending the actual event? If so keep us updated with what happens!

"Swarm Light' by rAndom International / Design Miami / Art Basel 2010

VIP attendees of the annual Design Miami/Art Basel art and design showcase in Switzerland Monday are being treated to a new interactive light sculpture from London design studio Random International.

Comprised of hundreds of LEDs that are physically linked with polished brass and electronically linked by micro controllers, Swarm Light takes audio visualization into the real world using three 3D grids of lights.

Interactivity is based around embedded microphones that pick up nearby sounds. The audio is processed in real time by software and transformed into corresponding light animations that float above you like swarms of choreographed fireflies. The effect is breathtaking. "

I don't know but I can check with rAndom International what their plans are. I would also like to see the finished installation. :)

I've only seen a single cube when I was in London a couple of weeks ago to finalize my part of the project. Even a single cube looked fantastic so I bet the finished piece is absolutely awesome...

OK this may be a cool use of an XMOS device or two but what is it with this world wide obsession with LED cubes all of a sudden?

There has been a huge LED cube outside the Rai Exhibition Center in Amsterdam for ages.

We had a ton of tiny white lights driven by 8085's in night clubs back in the early eighties. (well OK without so much of the interactive part).

I think this one is special due to the interactive sound part which is why it is getting a lot more attention.

EDIT: Has also been posted on ElectronicsWeekly:
