Slice power limits

Technical discussions related to any XMOS development kit or reference design. Eg XK-1A, sliceKIT, etc.

Slice power limits

Post by Folknology »

What should I consider to be the power limit for 3v3 and 5v on a slice board. Clearly on a multi slice dev boards it will depend on total slice consumption, but for say Startkit with only a single slice installed what would be the max current (particularly 3v3).

Are there any power guidelines for slice design?

From the Slicekit Hardware Manual:
The Core Board provides 3V3 and 5V at 0.25A each for a total of approximately 2W per slice.
It's a bit ambiguous, but it seems that each Slice can use 0.25 A on each of the 3V3 and 5V rails.

3.3 V @ 0.25 A = 0.825 W
5.0 V @ 0.25 A = 1.25 W

TSC is correct, for the L16 slicekit core board each slice can draw 0.25A on each rail. If you're only using one slice slot you could take more, the connectors are rated to c. 1.1A

Startkit should be able to cope with the 0.25A limit, however the VBUS current may exceed 500mA so a powered hub (or wall wart running from flash) may be required.
