I've been disappointed by the "Slice" pricing, it looks like they're priced for the Company/University market and not the hobbyist, which is a shame. But I suspect their pricing reflects their true assembly costs and not like some price-sported boards (by the semiconductor company) you can...

Running a byte-code VM sounds feasibly.

You could look at using SPI based RAM or E2/Flash to give more program space. The 23xx1024 from Microchip has SQI (4-bit SPI) and will give you 128KB

I must admit I agree with Heater on this. Marketing double speak has spoilt the sliceKIT introduction for me. It's not a 16-core device, please correct this marketing double speak

Hi Yvo

I've got the Aoyue 852a and I'm happy with how it performs.

I usually tack the corner pins of the IC packages first using a pencil soldering iron, then reflow using the Aoyue.
