Good inter pcb connector for 16/32 channels

Postby nico » Sat Dec 02, 2017 11:23 am

Hi,

I am looking for the good connector to connect a master board with a XEF-216 and 4 dacs with 8 channels (4x8=32ch) to 2 boards with small power amplifiers for each channel. Each amp board has 16ch.
I want to use an IDC type connector like this one :
https://www.digikey.com/product-detail/ ... ND/1114908
40 pins : 16 signals pins + 16 ground pins + 8 pins for digital I/O (such as amp mute/shutdown)
So I will use 2 connectors on the main board
What do you think of this choice ? Any better options ?

Thanks
Regards,
Nicolas

Hello Nicolas. Guess that this 2.54 mm IDC style connector will work but the width of the connector is quite large and does not need to be.

If you do proceed with this style, there are many much lower cost manufacturers of this style of connectors in China. We have used a few of them with very high quality results. They can even customize the pin lengths etc. to suit. For initial proto qty, stick with Digikey, Mouser but any volume, go overseas for raw parts. Often the same offshore suppliers supply the major brands and can sample the parts but you will have to cover the shipping to your site.

Personally like the 2 mm pitch parts which we have used on a mix of our designs. You can source the male and female parts through Samtec but again, offshore is at a fraction of the Samtec costs. Samtec build some very solid mating connectors.

We have used high volumes from this supplier with excellent results. There are many others including WCON but at higher costs.

Hi Mon2,
Thanks for your answer.
I have no room problem so I may go with IDC at least for prototyping. I target a few hundreds of boards over 3 years, so I don't know if it is worth dealing directly with China. But I will get in touch with the company you mentioned.
Regards,
Nicolas
