XMOS driver / software error message - ?

Post by gpc2 »

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question.

I have an SMSL X-USB XMOS USB to Spdif Converter DAC DSD IIS Digital Audio Interface.

The unit comes with a driver disk, I used this to install the driver on my windows 7 laptop and everything worked fine, been using it for a few weeks to go from the computer usb to a digital input on my receiver. I just got a windows 10 Dell laptop, installed the driver, and it won't work on the new laptop.

When I launch the XMOS window, it says device not detected and this is the message I get in Windows 10 device manager:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

Driver version is 3.20.0.0

XMOS XS-1-U8 MFA (ST)

I contacted SMSL, their reply was that the unit is compatible with windows 10.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I think I just need a valid driver.

Thanks,
Gerry

The way I reconcile the error message you are getting with the manufacturer saying they support Windows 10 is that the driver is written with a Windows 10 compatible API, but that it isn't signed / registered with the Microsoft driver signing authority. The same thing would happen if you made a peripheral and wrote your own driver for it.

Here is what Microsoft has to say:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... ned-driver

If they are responding to your tech support requests, I would read the above article, and then ask them if they expect their driver to be signed.

If they do expect it to be signed, then the driver you have may be incompatible, and shouldn't be used.

Otherwise you can try the following at your own risk:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... t-and-test

Gerry - did SMSL supply you with the requested driver - see your post on their website. Ultimately, it is the full responsibility of the vendor that sold the goods to offer the required support as there may be some customization in this design that would demand a custom device driver. Very unlikely that they did any customization but regardless, they should be able to forward the driver for Windows 10. Did see your post there as well so interested to know if you received the driver. Other customers have also come to this forum as SMSL did not support them properly. That is of concern. No support = no sales for this vendor. Simple.
