Clarification on allowable VDDIOT in XEF216 datasheet

Post by chouston00 »

Can VDDIOT (RGMII interface supply) on the XEF216 be powered from 3.3V? The datasheet seems to indicate that it can (two different ranges are listed in table 14.1 - one for 2.5V and one for 3.3V) and section H.5 on page 74 says "VDDIOT has a 2.5V or 3.3V supply as appropriate", however there is a seemingly contradictory statement in section 13 (Board Integration) - "...VDDIOT powers the RGMII IO pins, and must be provided with 2.5V".
Thanks!

Hi, Yes 3v3 is fine VDDIOT. It only must be 2.5V when interfacing to RGMII. If you're using it as GPIO then 3v3 is OK.

Is 3.3V allowable when using the RGMII and interfacing to a phy that supports 3.3V RGMII?

Hi, yes that's fine. Timing was closed at 2.5V and the standard says 2.5V, but the ports will be faster at a higher voltage (which is allowed on the I/O) so it will be OK.
