I managed to hack up an XC-1A to fit into a waterproof enclosure. It's hard to see from the picture but it's tall enough to pack in a lot more goodies. With 4 AA batteries, it lasts about 10 minutes. The next step is to figure out how to get this device to last longer on a set of batteries. The first goal is to be able to have it last a month on a set of batteries. The goal of this prototype at the moment is to measure light intensity, humidity, temperature and soil moisture. It will also be able to control a simple valve connected to a tank of water suspended in the air for automatic watering.

The device will record and log measurements every half or or hour. If the soil moisture is below a certain threshold it will briefly activate a valve and allow some water to flow into the pot. Sensor data will be transfered to a PC using a zigbee radio.
