Hi Folknology,

Thanks for your last suggestion - I apologise for not responding earlier; it has taken me a while to absorb the implications of buffered input approach. I will certainly give it a try.

I am still not sure though that the problem does not exist, at least for very short durations of the XORed signal, in that the input code is told that the pulse is over before the handling of the leading edge has completed.

I would imagine that using a dual-core system running from a common clock and separate start/stop pulses would work but this does seem overkill. For my present application, the fact that we can't detect delays less than some 40 - 50 nsecs is not a show-stopper but, still, it would be nice.
