No idea on what you have purchased but are you running some firmware utility to upgrade like M2 tool  by SMSL ? Have you followed the details on applying the proper USB Product ID, etc. so that the tool can locate the attached hardware ?

When you attach your USB widget to your PC, do you see the device in your Device Manager ? As you plug or remove the USB device, the PC must be able to enumerate the docked piece of hardware. The XMOS USB support can be hit or miss on some platforms so do experiment by testing other USB ports on your box; different operating systems, etc. till the tool runs correctly.

Found some chatter on a user forum but is all in Chinese but believe it is reporting that the target flash device vendor & part number must be supported to allow for the fix. May be wrong on the details but see here:

http://www.unitedlink.hk/en/forum/xmos/ ... 0-dsd.html

What this may mean is that the flash IC on your piece of hardware is not supported by the reflash application program. However, before concluding this, do review the full details on how to use the reflash program and also be sure your PC is able to see the docked product. If using Windows 8, consider to run on Windows 7. If using USB3.0 ports, consider to test the reflashing on USB2.0 ports.

If the vendor does not support the product they sell - hit them where it hurts - their bottom line and report the poor experience for others to avoid.

Good luck !

Which firmware do you have ?

Which utility are you using to attempt the firmware upgrade ?

From where did you receive the firmware & flash utility ? SMSL does not appear to list the necessary tools public on their website.

Ok - after much searching found the utility to reflash the M8 is the same as the M2:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/743990/new-m8- ... 18-xmos/60

So have you ran this program and then applied the USB IDs (which you can view from your Device Manager tree on Windows) ?

What is the Vendor ID of your M8 unit ? If from SMSL it should be 262A (hex value). You can view this information from the Device Manager -> locate the product in the tree and view the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controllers -> locate and select the M8 function -> Details tab -> pull-down the Hardware IDs and you should see the VID_xxxx&PID_yyyy values.

Post these values here.

The same values must be used with the M2 (M8) reflash utility.

Then input the firmware filename and path on where it is located on your computer into the same reflash utility.

Select the BIN radio button.

Be sure the VENDOR ID & PRODUCT ID match the values extracted from the Device Manager review.

Then select the WRITE TO EEPROM BUTTON (spelling typo on their s/w).

Download the following tool:

There M8 firmware update released by SMSL: http://smsl-audio.com/index.php?c=download&id=1130&

Extract using 7 zip or similar to extract the RAR file download.

The above download appears to offer all that you will need to update your M8.

Does this program run on your box ? Does it report the current version of the firmware ?

Use it with the supplied binary file to reflash your M8. Do review the SMSL M8 Update PDF document on step by step details on the update procedure.

According to the M8 PDF documentation, this is not required. You should be able to just run the reflash program and it should be able to locate the M8 and reflash the firmware.

Be sure to run the M8 utility as shown in the PDF document from the download.

I have performed this task many times, on windows 8.1, windows 7, and different USB ports, this is where the error shows up.
