To XMOS staff: buy one component in a kit (XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL)?

Post by jerryXCORE »

I want to try "AVB Audio Daisy Chain" kit:
https://www.xmos.com/support/boards?product=17634

Most of kit contents can also be found in sliceKit, and I bought two sliceKits already.
So I just need one more component:
* XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL

But it seems that "XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL" is not sold separately, right?
Any idea? Thanks!

Most of the slices can be bought separately.

You can get the audio slice at digikey:

http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... ND/3622823

and perhaps other distributors, but I haven't checked that.

Thanks, but your link shows: XA-SK-AUDIO
I need: XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL

Are these two components same? (They are different in appearance!)

Ah I missed that detail, apologies.
Ignore my previous comment.

Hi jerryXCORE,

These two slices (XA-SK-AUDIO and XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL) are different and you need the XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL one to work with AVB due to the adjustable PLL.

Unfortunately this is only available in the Dasiy-chain kit, and not supplied separately.

Sorry,

A regret to know, but thanks all.

Just curious, why does this sliceCARD(XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL) NOT follow the same production/sale logic of other sliceCARDs, which is convenient for customers?

Hi,

The PLL used on this board was specifically added for the AVB application and as such has only been used with the daisy chain kit.

thanks,

Is there something sacred about this PLL design ? Where can we review the full details of this PLL with respect to your requirements ? The reason being that Adafruit offers a $8 USD PCB with a pre-mounted PLL (SiLabs Si5351A) which is proven to be a very quality PLL and may be also suitable for your audio project. The PLL is programmed via I2C so you will need to either program the PLL using an external micro (we did this using a 35 cents micro - EFM8 from SiLabs to be truly stand alone and also did the same using a low cost FPGA) or could easily code the same I2C master routine into the XMOS CPU. If the PLL spec fits for your needs, review our XMOS source code posted here:

http://www.xcore.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... t=adafruit
* check towards the end of this thread for the source code

The Adafruit PLL board is $8USD from Digikey and offers 3 output clocks of user's choice. The ref crystal on this PLL is 25 Mhz so please take note of this detail. The SiLabs Clock Builder tool (free) can be used to quickly determine the PLL register values. We have confirmed at least a dozen or so frequencies with 0 PPM deviation. Excellent PLL in our opinion and under $ 1 USD.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kumar!

Actually I am new to the audio area, so I just want an easy kit to start with, without too much hassle:
* XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL includes: PLL, CODEC, output port to speaker.
* So it will be an easy setup for me if they sell it separately.

But I read the thread you mentioned, your project/instructions is definitely resourceful and helpful. I will stop by the thread for more helps later.

I don't think XA-SK-AUDIO-PLL is sold separately. Only as part of the whole AVB-DC package.

Alternatively a good starting point into audio, AVB or USB, would be the xCORE-200 multichannel board, XK-AUDIO-216-MC-AB.
