A couple more data points on this.
I hooked up an AVR i2C (codevisionavr) to the FRAM. In the process, I captured the AVR's i2c signals to the FRAM on both the logic analyzer and the DSO.
I've attached both images. This is of a start sequence followed by an 0xf8 to start the sequence to read the manufacturers ID.
In any case, it wasn't obvious to me from the oscilloscope trace why there was no ACK - the part just acts dead to these commands.
