WINNER ANNOUNCED - July Competition

I can now happily say:
Congratulations BBenJ!!
BBenJ is the winner of our first USB sliceKIT round. Our runners up who will be entered into the second round community poll are:

This was BBenJ's project idea:

USB-based with autonomous capabilities (SD card), multi-plateform, multi-axis, high-speed and flexible CNC controller unit.

The winning project and 10 'runners up' were chosen by Matt Fyles, our Director of Software Tools Development.

Another thread will follow for the next round poll.

As a lot of people seemed to like the Analog sliceKIT offer and competition that we ran over the last couple of months, we're going to do something again, but with a few improvements!

This time there are 3x XMOS USB sliceKITs up for grabs!

This means there is now also 3 chances of winning:

[list][*]Kit 1, like last time, will go to the Project idea which will be picked by an XMOS staffer[/list]
[list][*]Kit 2, will go to the winner of a Community poll[/list]
[list][*]Kit 3, will go to the person with the highest number of Activity Points for the month of July.[/list]

Competition Schedule:
  • The winner for Kit 1 and the 10 entries for Kit 2 will be picked by an XMOS staffer on Mon 14th July
  • A poll will then run for one week, from the 14th-21st July, the winner of which will receive Kit 2
  • Finally, the winner of Kit 3 will be announced on Aug 1st, based on the final leaderboard positions for July.

What do I need to do?

Kit 1 Competition Details:
  • Each person is allowed to submit a single "Project Idea" by posting it in this competition thread.
  • Unlike last time, we will not be asking you strictly adhere to 10 words. Entries can be upto 20 words, and any number less than this will also be accepted.
  • Project Ideas should cover what you would use the kit for, should you win.
  • At midday (BST) 14th July. This round of the competition will close.
  • Entries will be put into a list based on when they were posted, the usernames will be removed and the XMOS staffer picking the winner will not know which Project Ideas belong to whom.
  • XMOS staff are not allowed to enter the competition
Kit 2 Competition Details:
  • 10 'runners up' will be picked alongside the 'winner' of Kit 1. These 'runners up' will go into a Poll for the community to vote on a winner.
  • The poll will run for 1 week (or just under, given time taken to pick the 10 and update from 3pm (BST) on the 14th July - Midday (BST) 21st July
  • XMOS staff will be eligible to vote in the poll
  • The winner will be announced when the poll closes at Midday 21st July.
Kit 3 Competition Details:
  • Kit 3 will go to whoever has acquired the most activity points (using the new system) in July.
  • Gaming the system is strictly prohibited! Anyone thought to be manipulating their points total unfairly will be asked to put their reasons to the moderators.
  • Anyone found trying to cheat the system will be ineligible for this competition and any further competitions run in 2014.
  • At the start of the competition you will be able to view the points leaderboard retrospectively (ie view your total score for the previous week). We hope that by the closing weeks of the month, we will be able to provide a real-time leaderboard.
  • XMOS staff will not be included in the final standings, although they may still appear in the leaderboard
Phew! I hope that all makes sense!

3 Kits, 3 rounds, 3 chances to win.

Any 'winner' can choose to drop out. In the event of this happening, the kit will go to the next runner up in that round. In the event that the winner of Kit 1 declines the kit for some reason. Kits will be offered to the 1st and 2nd place positions of the community poll.

1. The XMOS July Competition (the "Draw") is open to people aged 18 and over who complete the requirements of the rules.

2. Employees or agencies of XMOS Ltd ("XMOS", "We") its group companies or their family members, or anyone else connected with the Draw may not enter the Draw.

3. Entrants into the Draw shall be deemed to have accepted these Terms and Conditions.

4. By submitting any personal information you agree to receive emails from XMOS containing offers and developments that we think may interest you. You will be given the opportunity to unsubscribe on every communication that we send.

5. To enter the Draw you must reply to the competition thread with your project idea. You project idea must be 20 words or less to be valid. No purchase is necessary. If you have any questions about how to enter or in connection with the Draw, please e-mail us at with "July Competition" in the subject line.

6. Only one entry per person. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed.

7. XMOS accepts no responsibility for entries that are lost, delayed, misdirected or incomplete or cannot be delivered or entered for any technical or other reason. Proof of delivery of the entry is not proof of receipt by XMOS.

8. The closing date for opening round of the competition is 12:00 GMT on 14th July 2014. Entries received outside this time period may not be considered.

9. Incomplete entries may not be considered.

10. Judging will take place on 14 July 2014.

12. The winner will receive an XMOS USB sliceKIT.

13. XMOS accepts no responsibility for any costs associated with the prize and not specifically included in the prize.

14. Prize will be sent to the winner by post.

15. The name and country of the winner can be obtained after 18 July 2014 by sending a stamped addressed envelope to the following address: XMOS Ltd, Prudential Buildings, 11-19 Wine Street, Bristol BS1 2PH, UK.

16. The prize is non-exchangeable, non-transferable, and is not redeemable for cash or other prizes.

17. XMOS shall use and take care of any personal information you supply to it as described in its privacy policy, a copy of which can be seen at, and in accordance with data protection legislation. By entering the Draw, you agree to the collection, retention, usage and distribution of your personal information in order to process and contact you about your Draw entry, and for the purposes outlined in paragraph 4 above.

18. XMOS accepts no responsibility for any damage, loss, liabilities, injury or disappointment incurred or suffered by you as a result of entering the Draw or accepting the prize. XMOS further disclaims liability for any injury or damage to your or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participation in or downloading any materials in connection with the Draw. Nothing in these Terms and Conditions shall exclude the liability of XMOS for death, personal injury, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation as a result of its negligence.

19. XMOS reserves the right at any time and from time to time to modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, this Draw with or without prior notice if in its absolute discretion, it is deemed necessary, for any reason whatsoever. The decision of XMOS in all matters under its control is final and binding and no correspondence will be entered into.

20. XMOS shall not be liable for any failure to comply with its obligations where the failure is caused by something outside its reasonable control. Such circumstances shall include, but not be limited to, weather conditions, fire, flood, hurricane, strike, industrial dispute, war, hostilities, political unrest, riots, civil commotion, inevitable accidents, supervening legislation or any other circumstances amounting to force majeure.

21. The Draw will be governed by English law and entrants to the Draw submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.

Oh Goody I'm definitely up for this, not going to miss out on the competition this time, I would build:

An Open Source USB based RGB matrix display control unit for driving modular LED arrays, matrices (Cubes) and presentational displays.

Device for car/motorcycle monitoring. It should provide: gethering data from sensors (temperature, speed, ...) + GPS position of vehicle and send this data via GSM module to some server.

Such device allow:
  1. Get detailed information about vehicle from sensors
  2. Get position of vehicle
  3. Allow some additional control (for start: just turn on/off some vehicle function)
Usage case: For my motorcycle. All existing solution haven't ALL of this functionality together and doesn't flexible.
