For anyone else following this thread, the user reported via the xmos ticket system that the I2C code (for DAC etc config) had been left in from the example app.

The difference in behaviour between boards is explained by the fact that their hardware has no pull-ups on the lines that the xcore was trying to use for i2c comms - they were floating and thus varying behaviour was experienced.
