I spotted this on Xmos's github:

which proposes an Open Source Modular Development board called Slicekit.
It proposes a two board solution. The first board called a Basekit has the processing and daughter boards called Slices provide the peripherals and I/O.
The first Basekit has a L2 and the usual list of peripherals: Ethernet, USB, LCD, Audio, Prototying boards are listed for the Slices.
There's no board sizes, connector types or interface details on the page so I guess the proposal is still up for discussion....
