The new XS1-L1 48TQFP is now in stock at Digi-Key and they are being shipped. I'm getting some delivered today. I thought I might design something like the Sparkfun board using them.
Is anyone else doing anything with them?

I've just created the PCB part for it (Pulsonix).
I just thought of something that might be fun - put one chip on a little plug-in module for use with a motherboard. I did something like it with the transputer 30 years ago, and sold a lot of them. My distributor charged about £15,000 for my 16 transputer system with T800s.
