Options to program a blank XMOS device

What are my options to program the XMOS device when I get it blank(no firmware loaded) out of factory?

Let’s assume I will use external SPI flash memory to boot up my device

Would I still be able to use the XSYS connector to load the firmware or shall I have to use a pre-flashed memory in my design?

My belief is that XSYS or XTAG would need some firmware running on the XMOS device.

You can use XTAG adapter to flash the firmware on to external SPI flash device using xTIEMcomposer tool. You can also use some other third party tool to write the binary directly on to the external flash device.
