Standalone magnetics for AR8035?

Post by zab »

Heya

The Bel L829-1J1T-43 socket part is used on the MC Audio Platform, which includes the magnetics.

However, I intend to use a Neutrik Ethercon NE8FAH connector in my deisgn, which mandates standalone magnetics (Neutrik has no option for inbuilt magnetics).

Can anyone recommend any 'known good' mag modules to match with the AR8035 phy?

Alternatively, any other chipset + mag's known to work nicely with the MC Audio reference design?

Cheers

Hi zab. The Bel L829-1J1T-43 is a very costly device. We have found a valid replacement in China and have also met with the company at a trade show in Hong Kong. Since this meeting, we have sourced a mix of parts for assorted designs and each is working well. Soon we will move to production using their quality parts. Recommend that you contact the supplier to source a few pieces for your approval. Copied below are the requested details:

This supplier offers a drop in replacement for the above Bel device. For lower qty, the respective costs will be slightly higher. Do consider the amount of gold plating on the RJ45 contacts (most important as gold can wear off during insertion / removal of the respective cable). The recommended amount of gold on the RJ45 connector is 30u" gold plating. For the actual solder pins of the RJ45 connector, ok to use 'gold flash' or a small amount of gold to solder onto the PCB.

Another supplier who is more expensive but is able to support smaller volumes is:

Link-PP (they supply Texas Instruments for their Beaglebone, etc. PCBs)

===============

We have sourced parts from each supplier (but more from TRXCOM). Moving forward, we expect to work with TRXCOM as they can also support Halogen Free compliant parts. For some of our key OEMs, the Halogen Free compliance is mandatory.

Here is the datasheet from TRXCOM for their drop in replacement device:

PS: For the RJ45, personally we prefer brighter LEDs over the dim style for the activity, etc. functions. For this reason, we actually did not like the default mcd rating of the supplied LEDs. TRXCOM was able to replace the same LEDs with much bright versions for our production run. Be sure to consider this when ordering samples, if that is important to your project.

In closing, very confident you should be able to source the magnetics (only) from either of the above suppliers but why not save on PCB space and source a single module with internal magnetics ? Be sure to insert room for surge & ESD protection of the ethernet port. We recently did such a design for our Gigabit project with TRXCOM RJ45 with internal magnetics - all working well. For us, Arrow supplied a very aggressive cost on the AR8035 devices.

Hope this helps.

As mentioned, the device uses Neutrik Ethercon for the connection to the network.

Thanks for your extensive reply, but I am not interested in an integrated module.

Only standalone magnetics.

Contact TRXCOM and relay the following details:

a) Ethernet PHY is AR8035 and you will require 100/1000 Mbps support

b) share the TRXCOM RJ45 P/N with magnetics and Bel P/N jack which are compliant with the XMOS design

c) then request that you are after ONLY the magnetics which they place inside their RJ45 connector

These are major players in the Ethernet world and can supply anything related to these topics.
