I have been reviewing the example schematics in the A8A datasheet and note that the example does not show a pullup resistor on the reset pin.
Appendix part M.2 discussing the JTAG-only xSYS header suggests that this is necessary.
Reviewing the schematic for the startKit, I cannot see a pullup on the RST_N net.
I'll be putting one in my design anyway (harmless, can be omitted from assembly), but would like the point clarified.
Is a reset pullup required on the A8A? Topic is solved

The RST_N pin (for XS1 A series and U series devices only, not L series) does indeed have an internal pull up.
See sction 4 (signal description):
RST_N | Global reset input | Input | (active) Low | PU, ST
It is not connected to a pull up on various XMOS A/U series boards as evidence :-)
